What is the National Affordable Housing Management Association

Established in 1990, the National Affordable Housing Management Association (NAHMA) is the top resource for the affordable multi-family housing industry. Above all other issues, NAHMA’s mission is to support legislative and regulatory policy that promotes the development and preservation of decent and safe affordable housing. NAHMA also provides educational training, scholarships, and a wealth of other benefits to property managers. Their current membership represents 75% of the affordable housing industry. They are headquartered just outside Washington, DC in Alexandria, VA.

NAHMA’s Lobbying Efforts

Affordable multi-family housing owners rely on NAHMA to advocate for regulatory policies that protect and advance the affordable housing industry. As a result, they are at the forefront of the affordable housing industry on a wide range of important legislative issues. In 2017, NAHMA’s specific advocacy work has focused on:

  • Legislation to preserve multi-family affordable housing
  • Appropriation bills for HUB and RD programs
  • Legislation to encourage investment in affordable housing
  • LIHTC reform bills
  • Federal deficit reduction initiatives
  • Modernization of federal IT platforms

Above all, NAHMA works to foster legislative policy that preserves existing affordable housing units and encourages the development of additional units.

NAHMA’s Communities of Quality

While NAHMA lobbies in Washington, it also works to establish industry standards. Their cornerstone program is Communities of Quality, a national program that acknowledges excellence in affordable housing properties. One of their many signature programs besides lobbying, the program requires excellence in the management of a property’s physical assets and finances. Even more important are the requirements for maintaining outstanding social conditions.

Other Benefits of NAHMA

Finally, NAHMA offers a wide range of benefits beyond lobbying and Communities of Quality. While these programs are important, NAHMA is the leading educational resource for industry professionals. They offer 9 unique property management credentials for affordable housing professionals including the Specialist in Housing Credit Management certification. Furthermore, they provide more than 100 scholarships annually to low-income housing residents. NAHMA also brings the industry together twice a year at their annual meetings in Washington, DC.
